Introduction

Welcome to the 5th Samhlaíocht Kerry Film Festival. This
year we will screen 124 films as part of the festival, 95 Short Films
will be in competition. The festival received over 200 short film
entries and the calibre was extremely high. I would like to thank
all the filmmakers, national and international for submitting to the
Kerry Film Festival and wish each filmmaker in competition the best
of luck. Thanks to our adjudicators for their time and expertise.
The festival will screen 18 films produced in Kerry including Ruaidhí
Kirbys homage to hurling in North Kerry ‘Chasing Neilus Flynn’,
Andrew Duggan’s experimental film ‘Bán/Blanc’,
‘St. Brendan’ by Karl O’Connor, made with school
children from Castleisland and a number of short documentaries from
FÁS T.V. and Production students.
The festival will honour the late Tadgh O’Coilean, who died
early this year, with a night of Tadgh’s films in the Great
Blasket Centre. He was a ‘Champion’, and the festival
is honoured to pay respect to him - our thanks to Tadgh’s family
and friends for all their assistance.
The Kerry Film Festival is proud to present the amazing and sublime
film ‘Tibet:Cry of the Snow Lion’ - 10 years in the making
in the Phoenix Cinema, Dingle.
We are also delighted to screen two John Boorman classics - ‘Point
Blank’ and his highly awarded autobiographical film ‘Hope
and Glory’, which was nominated for seventeen BAFTA awards in
the Kerry Omniplex, Tralee.
The Kerry Film Festival is delighted to present an educational programme
with IFI for Leaving Cert and Transitional students in the Kerry Omniplex
and also a workshop in film for English teachers.
Our thanks to Buena Vista for giving us a premiere of Marc Forester’s
(Monsters Ball) latest film ‘Finding Neverland’ starring
Johnnny Depp, in the Classic Cinema, Listowel.
Can you believe its 20 years since the first ever film to have Dolby
sound ‘Stop Making Sense’ was released? You have a chance
again to dance in the aisles and if you’re looking for a different
film experience check out the venue - a Polytunnel on Gortbrack Farm.
The festival would like to thank our corporate sponsor Ardmore Studios
and especially Kevin Moriarty for all his support, thanks also to
Kerry County Council, Fáilte Ireland, Siamsa Tíre, IFI,
Cork Film Centre, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Shannon Development
and the Arts Council for all their support.
Finally thanks to all of the 10 venues in Cahirciveen, Tralee, Dingle,
Dún Chaoin and Listowel for exhibiting film this year and to
all the filmmakers and distributors.
Enjoy the Festival!
