Witness (Leaving Cert)
Peter Weir USA / 1985 / 112mins
When Amish boy Samuel Lapp witnesses a brutal murder in Philadelphia train station, he and his mother Rachel get caught up in the investigation. Officer John Book, (Harrison Ford), is shot after he uncovers police involvement in the crime and he is given shelter within the Amish community. The first Hollywood film for Australian filmmaker, Peter Weir, (The Truman Show, Master and Commander), it recounts the experiences of the city cop who has to learn a quiet and traditional way of life on an Amish farm. Witness is an absorbing and challenging addition to the Leaving Cert. and offers many possibilities for comparative study of social context, relationships and theme.

Shattered Glass (Transition Year) Billy Ray USA / 2003 / 94mins
In 2003, the reputation of The New York Times was damaged by revelations that their former journalist, Jayson Blair, had fabricated several of his stories. This engaging film is based on the true story of reporter Stephen Glass, who made up some 27 of his 41 published stories while working for the political magazine, The New Republic.
et in Washington in the late 90s, the film gives a detailed portrait of life on the newspaper where the editors encourage their bright young reporters. Glass is an approval-seeking popular journalist whose fraud is ultimately exposed. But even when the viewer finds out, the skill of the film is in leaving us just wondering about the truth of what we have seen.

Much Ado About Nothing (Leaving Cert)

Kenneth Branagh UK-USA / 1993 / 110mins
Kenneth Branagh's popular film adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy is set in the beautiful Tuscan countryside. The plot centres on two pairs of lovers, Hero and Claudio (Kate Beckinsale and Robert Sean Leonard) whose love is thwarted and almost destroyed by villain Don John (Keanu Reeves). The other couple, Beatrice and Benedick (Emma Thompson and Kenneth Branagh) are almost kept apart by their own stubbornness and refusal to admit their love for one another. In contrast to Hero and Claudio's conventional romance, their courtship is a war of words, and their scenes together provide some of the film's wittiest moments.

I’m Not Scared (Transition Year) Gabriele Salvatores
Italy-Spain / 2003 / 108mins
Io non ho paura It is summer 1978, the hottest on record, and 10-year-old Michele (GIUSEPPE CRISTIANO) lives with his family in a rural southern Italian village, surrounded by endless expanses of corn fields, billowing beneath brilliant sunny skies. His days are filled with the familiar routines of childhood - performing dull chores for his mother (AITANA SÁNCHEZ-GIJÓN), minding his younger sister, Maria (GIULIA MATTURRO), and embarking on his bicycle for outdoor adventures with the other village children. On one such adventure at an abandoned house, Michele makes a shocking discovery. A haunting coming-of-age story combined with breathtaking cinematography and nailbiting suspense, I’M NOT SCARED offers a vivid and frightening view of the adult world through ©MIRAMAX the eyes of children - a journey from light to darkness and, ultimately, back to light.
