Fishing the Sloe Black River Brendan Bourke
Ireland / 1996 / 14.35min / 35mm / Black and White
Set in pre-Celtic Tiger Ireland, the film takes an eloquent
cinematic look at the effect of emigration on the lives
of the parents left behind in a small rural town. Mr
and Mrs Conheeny search for ways to express the loss
of their children to other rivers around the world.
While the women fish for their sons from the local riverbank,
their husbands try to hold the towns ageing football
team together. It was shot in Killorglin, Faha and the
surrounding area with an immeasurable amount of help
and co operation from the people of the area without
whose goodwill and assistance we could not have made
this film.
